Badaling is the most typical and most popular section of the Great Wall. Located at Yanqing County, more than 70 kilometers northwest from Beijing city center, it was first built in 1505 and restored in both the 1950s and 1980s. It has a total length of 3, 741 meters with an average height of 8 meters. The function of Badaling was to protect the Juyongguan Pass and the top of the wall was designed to accommodate five horses ridden abreast when needed. This section of the Great Wall was made using huge bar rocks, some of which are over two meters tall and weigh hundreds of kilograms. The inner Wall is a mixture of mud and stone block. The top floor of the wall is paved with square bricks, which gives the surface a smooth quality. On the highest section of the wall, signal fire platforms were set up to send warning signals when invaders approached in ancient times. The platforms now make ideal vantage points, from which to see the wall snaking into the distant over undulating hills.
Badaling also houses the large-scaled China Great Wall Museum, which includes a photo gallery and the Great Wall Circle Vision Theater, a 360 degree amphitheater which shows a 15 minute film on the history and folklore of the Great Wall.
