  • Wuhan Heptachord Terrace (Guqin Tai)
    Travel in China>Central China>Hubei China>Wuhan China>

Heptachord Terrace (Guqin Tai), also named Boya Terrace (Boya Tai), is located at the west of Tortoise Hill (Gui Shan), Hanyang District. The architectural complex of the Heptachord covers an area of 10,000sqm. This area is composed of courtyard, woodland garden, flower beds and tea house. Though small in size, the whole complex is elegant in layout and demarcated in arrangement. Once you enter the main gate, pass the courtyard and walk out the right gate of the teahouse you will see the screen wall. The four characters "Yin Xin Shi Wu (Yinxin Stone House)" were written by the emperor Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). On the east side of the screen wall is a small gate. The two characters 'Qin Tai (Heptachord Terrance)'  was written on the tablet hanging on the gate. It was said that the characters were written by the famous calligrapher Mi Fu in the North Song Dynasty (960-1127). Upon entering the gate and pass through a long porch, you'll reach the Heptachord Hall (Qin Tang), which is also named Friendship Hall (Youyi Tang). In front of courtyard of the Heptachord Hall is the square-shaped terrace which is made of white jade, and this terrace is the Heptachord Terrace.

There is a story about friendship that happened here during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476). It was said that a famous musician named Yu Boya was once strained here by a sudden heaven rain. He played heptachord on his boat. The woodman, Zhong Ziqi heard his music at that time and Yu Boya found that Zhong Ziqi could thoroughly understand his music. They became good friends and made an appointment to meet at the same place a year later. Unfortunately, Zhong Ziqi died of disease and Yu Boya was so depressed that he smashed his heptachord in front of Zhong Ziqi's grave. Since then, he never played music any more. The story of their friendship moved many people, and therefore people built the Heptachord Terrace in memory of them.
The original terrace was built in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127), experiencing destroys and several rebuilding. The present one was the result of construction done in 1957.
