Nanchang, (meaning south prosperity) capital city of Jiangxi Province holds an important place in China's history. It was here on August 1st 1927, that communists Zhou Enlai and Zhu De staged the Nanchang Uprising with a force of only 30 000, giving birth to the People's Liberation Army. Today known as 'Hero City' for the many thousands who died during this conflict, the city has erected the Monument to the Martyrs and the Memorial Hall, south of People's Square , in memory of the uprising. Lying in the flat fertile Gan River Basin, Nanchang is a productive city with a history that dates back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). Smelting, lacquer wares, fabric and shipbuilding were all industries proliferating here in the past. One thing is for certain. The folk in Nanchang will never go thirsty. Poyang Lake is not only is the largest freshwater lake but the main potable-water-supplying base in China. Poets have waxed lyrical for centuries about the lake's tranquil atmosphere and scenery. Temples and lookout pavilions are scattered around the shoreline offering visitors interesting walks or simply a place to appreciate and relax. Environmentally important for another reason, the lake falls in the route of a waterfowl migratory path, with millions of birds, made up of over 300 species, passing through in winter. Poyang River is home to 95 percent of the world's population of some of these species. Shoppers will find Women Street in downtown Nanchang, a good choice. All manner of small commodities, beautiful clothes and certain varieties of porcelain are sold on this street. Prices are reasonable.
