Located in southern Jinan City, Thousand Buddha Mountain (Qianfo) Mountain rises 258m above sea level. It covers an area of 1,660,000sqm and is one of the three best places of interest in Jinan (along with Daming Lake and Baotu Spring). Li Mountain is the ancient name of the Thousand Buddha Mountain. During the period from 581 to 600, numerous Buddha portraits were built on the mountain, and thus the name Thousand Buddha Mountain was given. The Thousand Buddha Temple lies at the half way point of the mountain. Spread over the western and eastern side of the mountain is the Grand Hall, Guanyin Hall, Mile Hall and Duihua Pavilion. More than 130 Buddha portraits built in the Sui Dynasty (581-618AD) are standing in the area known as Thousand Cliff. In this area one can find the Longquan Cave, Jile Cave, Qianlou Cave, and Lvzu Cave. Lixia Courtyard lies to the east of the Thousand Buddha Temple and is an architectural complex seen as a connection of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. To the north of the Thousand Buddha Temple, there is a Wanfo Cave (Ten Thousand Buddha Cave) where one may admire Buddha portraits from the North Wei Dynasty (386-534AD), Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) and Song Dynasty (960-1279AD).
